Collective nouns

Речь пойдёт о существительных типа government, team, audience, etc., которые в зависимости от своего значения могут согласовываться с глаголом-сказуемым как в единственном, так и во множественном числе.

Для небольшого упражнения возьмём слова из правила стр. 45 Alexander Longman English Grammar, а именно: company, audience, class, club, committee, congregation, council, crew, crowd, family, gang, government, group, jury, mob, staff, team и union.

Переведём и запомним их значение, воспользовавшись словарём под ред. проф. Апресяна:

 audience  публика, зрители, аудитория

 club  клуб, группировка, блок
 committee  комитет, комиссия
 congregation  собрание, сходка,прихожане, паства
 council  совет

 gang  бригада; партия; смена ( рабочих и т. п. ), банда, шайка
 government  правительство
 group  группа
 jury  присяжные (заседатели); суд присяжных
 mob  толпа, сборище
 staff  персонал, личный состав, сотрудники, штат
 team  команда
 union  объединение, союз, уния

Подбирая предложения для упражнения, сделала вывод, что в американском варианте языка собирательные существительные согласуются с глаголом только в единственном числе, а в британском они могут согласовываться со сказуемым как в единственном числе, так и во множественном числе, причём явной разницы в выборе между числом нет.

Вот, к примеру, что говорит словарь Merriam-Webster’s Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (En-En) о существительном family:

In U.S. English, family is used with a singular verb.
His family has always supported him.
In British English, family can also be used with a plural verb.
His family have always supported him.

Представленное ниже упражнение, составленное на базе как американского, так и британского вариантов, таким образом, не даст читателям ясного представления о правиле, однако даст возможность просмотреть употребление collective nouns на примерах.

Обычно при выполнении подобных упражнений мы руководствуемся контекстом: ищем подсказку в лице местоимений или выбираем сказуемое по признаку подлежащее — одно целое или подлежащее — все члены этого целого.
